The EU must deliver an ambitious revision of the animal welfare legislation, as promised by the Commission in 2021, and thus follow the overwhelming citizen support for better conditions for the animals. Signatories of this plegde support:

A comprehensive and rapid revision of the animal welfare legislation. To this end, the Commission must especially publish three proposals (breeding, slaughter, and labeling regulations), as it had committed to do in 2020.
Ambitious proposals aligned with the most advanced scientific knowledge (EFSA opinions) to better protect animals.
Specific provisions for each species farmed in the EU.
The inclusion in regulations of mirror measures to ban the import on the EU market of products that do not match European standards.

Campaign history

February 2025

10 NGOs from across the EU demonstrate in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Dozens of activists wearing chickens mask voted for an ambitious revision of the animal welfare legislation and asked MEPs to not chicken out and sign the pledge of the campaign

June 2025

Street artist INVADER has joined forces with us to create the visuals for the second major milestone of the "Uncage the Law" campaign. In front of the European Parliament in Brussels, the same coalition unveils a giant tifo bearing the message “We need more space!” Meanwhile, a poster campaign “invades” the streets, public transport systems, and the airport. More Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are adding their support by signing the campaign’s pledge.

About the campaign

The meat industry and farmers unions derailed a move by the European Commission to strengthen the animal welfare legislation. Four regulations (farming, transport, slaughter, labelling) were supposed to put an end to practices such as cages, mutilations, or extreme densities. Of all four, only the one about transport was published, even though all the opinion surveys show an overwhelming citizen support for better conditions for the animals. The European Union is a democracy and must stand up for all its citizens, not just for specific professional groups.
